Economic Impact

HRMC remains one of Amarillo's largest employers, with a total of 8,977 workers. An additional 807 jobs were reported in 1999 over the previous year, for an overall increase in employment of 9.88%. On average since 1994, total employees of HRMC institutions have increased by 11.78% annually. Economic growth in the industry as well as continued investment in technology and services have fostered this positive trend.

According to the Texas State Comptroller's Office, it is reasonable to estimate that 35.4 jobs are created for each $1 million directly spent in the economy. Using this factor, the expenditures of HRMC member institutions were responsible for creating an additional 16,873 jobs in 1999. This represents a 32.13% increase over the previous year. Considering aggregate employment and total job creation, the Medical Center was responsible for creating at least 25,850 jobs in 1999.
