• 68% of all clients receiving victim assistance from Family Support Services were under the age of 18 years of age. Of the total number of victims served, 44% were 12 years of age and younger.

• While there were 97 rapes reported during 1995 in Potter and Randall counties, there were 237 sexual violations against children reported.

• Larceny Theft accounts for the largest number of crimes committed in Amarillo and Canyon. In Amarillo, Larceny Theft accounts for 68% of crimes committed; and in Canyon, it accounts for 85% of all crimes committed.

• Reported incidences of family violence continue to rise. The overall rate of increase from 1994 to 1996 was 10%.

• There are 20 gangs recognized by the Amarillo Police Department as operating in Amarillo. The gangs are composed mostly of youth 13 to 21 years old.

• Amarillo ranks second of 14 Texas cities studied for the highest number of unrestrained and incorrectly restrained children in vehicles.

• 54.5% of children observed during a study were unrestrained while 13.1% were incorrectly restrained. The fourteen cities include Amarillo, Austin, Beaumont, Brownsville, Bryan/College Station, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock, San Antonio, Tyler and Waco.

• Arson is the single most contributing factor in structure fires, at 23%. The Amarillo Fire Department reports indicate that of the 391 structure fires in 1995, 89 were arson.

• Of the 7,352 calls to which the Amarillo Police Department responded in 1996, 64%, or 4,669, were Rescue/EMS responses. Only 36% of their responses were for fires or other types of calls.
