Elderly

• The population in Potter and Randall counties is growing older. Total number of persons over age 60 grew by 74.5% from 1970 to 1990, and this is the largest segment of the total population. From 1980 to 1990, the total number of persons over age 60 increased by 20%.

• It is estimated that 80% of adults over age 65 have one or more chronic illness for which drug therapy is an essential part of health maintenance. Many senior citizens do not have health insurance which covers prescription medications. This often leads to choices having to be made between food and rent or prescription medications.

• In 1996, Medicaid payments for long-term care averaged $1,384 per month per client in Potter and Randall counties. Adult Day Health Services averaged only $592 per month per client. Maintaining the health of older adults is paramount in their ability to remain in their own care.

• Of the 843 cases of abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly handled by Adult Protective Services in 1995-96, 88% were valid.
