• The number of children living in poverty has nearly doubled from 1980 to 1990, according to the U.S. Bureau of Census. Over 30% of the child population age 18 and under were living in poverty in 1990.

• More than 60% of our children age 6 and under are in families with all parents working. There are currently 438 children and infants on waiting lists for child care facilities in Potter and Randall counties.

• Mentoring provides a growth opportunity for our young people. In 1996, 993 youth were involved in mentoring with 1,786 mentors. The majority of current mentoring programs target youth in high school, while few target younger children. Also, mentoring programs targeting specific populations such as Hispanic and Asian youth are in short supply.

• The number of female headed households with children grew from 1980 to 1990. Potter County saw the largest increase from 8.6% to 13.8%. Almost one out of every four African American households are headed by a woman.

• In 1995-96, the state investigated 1,391 reports of child abuse and neglect; 470 cases were confirmed.

• There are 96 licensed child care facilities and 199 registered family homes in Potter and Randall counties with a total capacity of 9,420 children. This is only 21% of the children population infant to 13 years of age
