An Executive Summary
Amarillo and Canyon, Texas - September 1997

Over the past several months, hundreds of community volunteers and representatives of several companies compiled research about our community. The effort focused on Amarillo, Canyon, Potter and Randall Counties; the Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The areas covered include:

The report is a profile of our community. It is not a needs assessment, it does not establish priorities, and it does not make recommendations for future action. The statistics gathered are intended to provide a compilation of key social, economic and community indicators that collectively measure the quality of life for different groups of people.

Volunteers working in the six study areas gathered data from numerous sources. The data presented in the report is not intended to be a reflection of the views or opinions of the partner organizations.

The information collected is documented in The Community Report, a book of more than 200 pages. The Community Report is available at no cost at the United Way of Amarillo and Canyon, 2207 Line Avenue.

The Community Report will give us information to help people--you and your neighbors. Health and human services agencies, government agencies, community organizations, policy makers and consumers will have better information to guide the allocation of our resources, to make decisions and better utilize our community talents.

This Executive Summary is a small portion of the Community Report. It highlights major points of public interest. We hope you will read it and have a better understanding of your community. We believe we can move confidently into the future, if we know where we are today and the past from which we came. Together we can offer more opportunities for the people of Amarillo and Canyon.
